La antigua tradición eclesiástica afirma que el cuarto evangelio fue escrito por el apóstol Juan, el predilecto de Cristo, en su vejez (cfr. 21, 23) en la comunidad cristiana de Efeso, metrópoli del Asia Minore. En la cronología se va desde el 28-30 hasta el final del siglo I (Diccionario RAVASI) y el más antiguo manuscrito que hay es del 150, al máximo del 200. Sin embargo las características que evidentemente diferencian este evangelio de los primeros tres, Juan quiere escribir un evangelio: lo comprueba la identidad del cuadro general y de los hechos fundamentales, las no raras indicaciones cronológicas - a veces existenciales -, geográficas y de otros tipos. Solamente Juan narra un prolongado ministerio de Jesús a Jerusalén. Las raíces palestinas del evangelio se descubren en el lenguaje arameo. Juan escribe años después de la muerte de Jesús (a. 30) y prefiere algunos hechos de la vida de Cristo, que, por razón de su contenido simbólico, permiten una profunda inteligencia del misterio de Cristo, bajo la guía del Espíritu Santo (cfr. 14, 26; 15, 26; 16, 13) y a la luz de la experiencia sobrenatural de la Iglesia. Juan conserva fielmente la sustancia de las enseñanzas de Jesús; y también se las ve una propia forma literaria. Se puede hablar de una tradición joánica - presente también en Lucas - en parte paralela y en parte complementaria de la tradición contenida en los tres primeros evangelios. El sublimo prólogo (1, 1-18) enuncia los temas desarrollados en el evangelio. LOS cc. 1, 19-4, 54 tenemos la manifestación de la naturaleza y de los poderes divinos de Cristo; en los cc. 5-22, en la polémica con los Judíos se profundizan temas esenciales del misterio de las persone y de la misión del Hijo de Dio; los cc. 13-21 contienen el relato de la pasión, de la muerte y de la resurrección de Cristo, con la inserción de sus últimas confidencias a los discípulos (cc. 13-17)."
