1Maccabées - Revised Standard Version (1966)
Le premier livre des Maccabées , écrit en hébreu et complètement perdu, fut rédigé en 100 et possède une valeur historique incontestable. Le livre rapporte l'histoire de l'épopée depuis le début de la révolte jusqu'à la mort de Simon (175-135). Il invite à lutter pour le salut de la nation face à l'hellénisme. Cette lutte inaugurée par Mattathias se poursuit avec des fortunes diverses sous ses trois fils Juda, Jonathan et Simon : Origine de la révolte (1,1-63), révolte sous Mattathias (2,1-69), Judas Maccabée (3,1-9,22), Jonathan (9,23-12,53), Simon (13-16). La lutte menée est une guerre sainte comme celles de Josué et de David. Il faut sauver l'alliance des pères, la loi, les observances, les coutumes. C'est Dieu qui procurera la victoire à ceux qui resteront fidèles. Favorables aux romains, les Hasmonéens représentent et garantissent le respect strict des lois et coutumes ancestrales. Le nom de Dieu n'y est pas mentionné.
