Le mot Galatie peut recouper deux sens : géographique ethnique (nord), et géographique administratif. L'étendue territoriale en question est totalement différente selon que l'on parle de l'une ou de l'autre entité. Il se pourrait que Paul s'adresse à l'église qu'il aurait fondée lors de son premier voyage missionnaire en Galatie du sud (soit galatie administrative). Des éléments judaïsants estiment obligatoires les prescriptions de la Loi juive, et jettent le trouble parmi des païens convertis au Christ. Paul répond rapidement à cette inquiétude. Il le fait d'une façon heurté et torrentielle : c'est l'une des plus émouvante lettre paulinienne.
