Romani - Revised Standard Version (1966)

La più estesa tra le lettere paoline è quella ai Romani, che è anche la più importante per comprendere il pensiero di Paolo sulla giustificazione del peccatore ad opera di Dio, mediante la redenzione di Cristo e il dono dello Spirito. È questo anche lo scritto che approfondisce rapporti e differenze tra ebraismo e cristianesimo; nello stesso tempo chiarisce come ogni differenza religiosa, razziale, sessuale, ecc. sia superata nella fede in Cristo. La comunità di Roma non è stata fondata da Paolo, tuttavia egli pensa di recarvisi per completare la sua missione di apostolo dei pagani. Per questo si fa precedere da questa esposizione sistematica della sua dottrina sulla giustificazione e sulla vita in Cristo e nello Spirito, che ha già avuto occasione di esporre in modo più sintetico e polemico nella lettera ai Galati. La lettera ai Romani sembra inviata da Corinto, dove Paolo è per la colletta, verso il 58 d.C. Di lì si porterà a Gerusalemme, per poi passare appun to a Roma.
