Dopo l'invio della prima lettera, scoppia a Corinto una crisi riguardo alla stessa autorità di Paolo. Nella seconda lettera a noi pervenuta, che sembra risultare dalla fusione di più testi inviati in tempi diversi, troviamo perciò una difesa della sua missione di apostolo attaccato da propagandisti giudeo-cristiani (cf. 2 Cor 10-13), la preparazione della sua prossima visita (cf. 2 Cor 1-7), indicazioni circa l'organizzazione di una colletta a favore delle comunità cristiane povere della Palestina come segno della comunione tra Chiese sorelle (cf. 2 Cor 8-9).
