Corinto ficava na Grécia, região chamada Acaia e no ano de 27 a C. César Augusto, imperador romano, fez de Corinto a capital da província romana da Acaia. Foi nesta cidade portuária, ruça e decadente na moral, que Paulo fundou uma forte comunidade cristã na sua segunda viagem. Aí encontrou o casal Átila e Priscila que muito o ajudou. Paulo ficou um ano e seis meses na Grécia, e daí escreveu para os coríntios. A primeira carta contém sérias repreensões dos pecados da comunidade: as divisões e a imoralidade. Em seguida dão respostas a questões propostas sobre o matrimônio, a virgindade, as carnes imoladas aos ídolos, as assembléias de oração, a ceia eucarística, os carismas, a ressurreição dos mortos, etc. É uma das cartas mais amplas de São Paulo em termos de doutrina e disciplina na Igreja.
