Apocalipse - Revised Standard Version (1966)

O imperador romano Domiciano (81-96) moveu forte perseguição aos cristãos, tendo deportado São João, que era bispo de Éfeso para a ilha de Patmos. Ao mesmo tempo os cristãos eram hostilizados pelos judeus e aguardavam a volta de Cristo, que não acontecia, para livrá-los de todos os males. Foi nesse contexto que o apóstolo escreveu o Apocalipse para confortar e animar os cristãos das já inúmeras comunidades da Ásia Menor. Apocalipse, em grego ?apokálypsis? (= revelação), era um gênero literário que se tornou usual entre os judeus após o exílio da Babilônia (587 ? 535 a C.), e descreve os fins dos tempos onde Deus vai julgar os homens. Essa intervenção de Deus abala a natureza (fenômenos cósmicos), com muita simbologia e números. A mensagem principal do livro é que Deus é o Senhor da História dos homens, e no final haverá a vitória dos justos. Mostra a vida da Igreja na terra como uma contínua luta entre Cristo e Satanás, mas que no final haverá o triunfo definitivo do reino de Cristo, triunfo que implica na ressurreição dos mortos e renovação da natureza material. - As calamidades que são apresentadas não devem ser interpretadas ao pé da letra. Deus sabe e saberá tirar de todos os sofrimentos da humanidade a vitória final do Bem sobre o Mal. (Alessandro Manoel da Silva)
