Notification

1. It has been brought to the attention of these Dicasteries that in certain countries there are movements regarding the discussion and planning of courses, directly or indirectly, aimed at the Diaconal Ordination of women. Such activity results in expectations lacking in a solid doctrinal foundation and therefore generates pastoral confusion.

2. Since the rule of the Church does not provide for the possibility of such ordination, it is therefore not lawful to initiate programs which, in a certain way, prepare female candidates for the Order of Deacons.

3. The authentic promotion of women in the Church, in conformity with the constant Magisterium of the Church and with special reference to the teachings of His Holiness John Paul II, opens other ample possibilities of service and collaboration.

4. The undersigned Congregations – in the sphere of their appropriate competencies – therefore exhorts each Ordinary, to apply and explain to their faithful the directive indicated above.
