Prof. Alapati Mataeliga – Samoa – 29.9. – English

First of all, we give thanks to the Lord for all He has done. Above all, He protects your and our life. Thank you to the Congregation for the Clergy for preparing this particular Conference and for having supplied the opportunity to be with you and to hear the voice of the Universal Church, rising throughout the world. We could say – this is the voice of the Church in its unity. Our heart is fully of joy in listening to the fellow brothers from all parts of the world, despite the possible distortion of our voices because of the great distances for transmission.

These are our thoughts and feelings concerning this beautiful Conference. I would like to thank you again for the Christological theme that we are discussing because it is a tiring job yet important, because it relates to a fundamental theme of the Christian faith, not only today but also in the past. In the theme so clearly propounded from various points of view, we may see how the proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is deepened. This also includes the human aspect also raised by Jesus in his human reality. Therefore, man must know and understand the complete love of God, which was achieved when Jesus came down from the Heavens as has been explained by the theme. However, with regards to today’s world situation, wars, serious diseases like AIDS, terrorism, etc., we must ask ourselves: "Where is God in all this?". I feel that this is the question asked of us every day.

We do know that the answer lies in our theme. But, we are missing the ways that this answer may reach all of humanity. We must work on this point now. If we do not do this, our discussion becomes useless. This is our thought, which we wish to contribute to our Conference. We greet you with the love of God and of our brothers in the common faith in Jesus Christ. We greet all of you! Your fellow Samoan brothers and priests thank you.
