La más extensa entre las cartas paulinas è aquella a los Romanos, que es también de la más importante para comprender el pensamiento de Pablo sobre justificación del pecador y obra de Dio, mediante la redención de Cristo y el dono del Espíritu. Es este también el escrito que profundiza las relaciones y diferencias entre hebraísmo y cristianismo; en el mismo tiempo aclara como toda diferencia religiosa, racial, sexual, etc. sea superada en la fe en Cristo. La comunidad de Roma no fue fundada por Pablo, sin embargo pensaba de dirigirse a ella para completar su misión de apóstol de los paganos.
