Fondée par Paul lors de son deuxième voyage missionnaire, la communauté des Philippiens est chère au coeur de l'apôtre. Il s'agit d'une lettre de remerciement en retour à la générosité de cette église. Elle est affectueuse, tendre. Elle fut écrite à Ephèse vers 56.
